Someone's gotta say it. Might as well be me. I know many will disagree, but I have my reasons.
Because he is hitting .310 in 13 games for the Nationals?
No.
Logan's current statistics have nothing to do with this. However, with the amount of close games the Tigers are playing down the stretch, a two out hit would turn into a lot more doubles if Logan could pinch run. Late in the game, inserting him for any player whatsoever would make sense. Too many times have the Tigers gotten stuck with Magglio on first with two outs, and a base hit moves him to second, not third. Logan would score in these situations.
His glove would be better than Ordonez in late innings because he would get to more balls. His arm would be suspect, but he would cut out a heck of a lot of doubles with his speed getting him to balls in the gap that Ordonez would have no chance for. Also, he could play closer to the line because he and Granderson could get to about anything in right-center.
Or, he could run for Monroe, or Thames, or Casey. He could run for anyone.
I think the point I'm trying to make is that Logan can run.
Props to the Nationals for giving him his chance. With Cameron Maybin waiting in the wings and Granderson poised to get better and better, there really isn't anywhere to put him for a few years on this squad. Logan's speed is too much of a commodity to waste.
The Tigers won't get much in return for this guy. It will be a player that you have never heard of and a player that you will never hear from again most likely. Though you never know, that's about all it will be worth.
Unfortunately, the Tigers gave Logan away. With a strong September of stealing bases and scoring from second, he could have upped his value, but the Tigers wanted to hold on to some others. But for Logan, he seems to have gone from hero to goat and back, and I hope he keeps it up.
